Getting Fit With a Personal Fitness Trainer

With today's busy schedules, it's easy to put off starting a fitness regimen "until next week." That's why so many of our members are opting to work out with one of our staff of highly qualified personal trainers.

This one-on-one training offers customized routines designed by a skilled fitness professional who works within your limits while encouraging you to reach your full fitness potential. If you have a specific physical challenge, your trainer can work closely with your physician to develop a program that is safe and gets the results you want. Personalized training programs typically include all the essential components of physical fitness: nutrition, cardiovascular endurance, resistance training and flexibility.

You don't have to be a die-hard fitness enthusiast to benefit from a personal trainer. If you're a beginner, an experienced trainer can demonstrate proper form and technique and give you immediate feedback so that you don't develop bad habits or waste time doing inappropriate exercises. Because it can take a few weeks before you see results from your new regimen, your personal trainer's enthusiasm can strengthen your willpower and help keep you motivated.

Oakwood strongly recommends a complete fitness evaluation while working with a personal trainer. To encourage this very important evaluation, we offer The Foundation Five program to new members.

All of Oakwood's personal trainers have a degree in a health related field or are certified to perform personal training by an accredited organization. Our Staff Bios section allows you to evaluate our personal trainers and select the fitness specialist that seems right for you.

Test Descriptions and Fees

Body Composition $10

This test is a primary factor in evaluating an individual's total health and fitness. Your body is comprised of two major components: lean mass and fat tissue. Lean body mass represents the weight of bones, muscles, organs and connective tissue. Fat tissue is necessary for protection, thermo-regulation, insulation and the transfer of fat soluble vitamins. As an indicator of health and fitness, your body weight is not as important as your percentage of fat.

Strength & Flexibility Battery $18

The strength battery consists of four separate components which test muscular strength, endurance and flexibility. The grip dynometer will determine forearm and grip strength. Performing crunches for one minute and continuous push-ups will each indicate the muscular endurance of those specific muscles groups. Lastly, this session uses a sit and reach test to evaluate low back and hamstring flexibility.

Cardiovascular Fitness $20

This test evaluates your aerobic capacity. This measure represents the maximal rate at which your body can supply energy for heavy exercise by utilizing oxygen.
You will be given an aerobic prescription which is a progressive routine designed specifically for you based upon your sub-max bicycle test. It will give you a week-by-week program to follow that includes vital improvement and maintenance phases.

Personal Training Guidelines

  1. Personal training fees must be paid in advance at the Activities Desk. Personal trainers are not allowed to accept payment in the Fitness Center. Checks should be made payable to Oakwood.
  2. Fees are non-refundable.
  3. Present paid receipts to your personal trainer before each session.
  4. All training sessions are to be conducted on Oakwood property. The Club's personal trainers are not permitted to conduct independent training sessions outside the Club.
  5. The Fitness Center should be notified 24 hours in advance if you are unable to keep a scheduled training session. With less that 24 hours notice, you may be charged for the full session.
  6. Because trainers often schedule consecutive appointments, sessions must begin and end on time.
