WHAT IS THE PILATES METHOD?
Joseph Pilates (1880-1967) was an innovator and visionary in the field of exercise and fitness.  His unique method of conditioning combines both mat and apparatus work to elongate, tone, and strengthen the whole body as a unit.  As a result, this improves posture, core support, range of motion, physical awareness, coordination and balance.  As Pilates unites body and mind, a more streamlined and efficient shape is created.

WHAT CAN PILATES DO FOR YOU?
Pilates first develops a strong sense of core (i.e. deep abdominals and muscles close to the
spine).  It then integrates core control, breath, and correct spinal and pelvic alignment. The effects of this are a healthy pain-free back, maximum power and efficiency of movement, as well as stress reduction.

Pilates also builds long, lean muscles, maintaining muscle elasticity and joint mobility.  This helps to prevent or rehabilitate injuries, improve sports performance, reforms posture and promotes optimal health and well being.

Pilates at Oakwood Athletic Club
We like to offer our members many different ways in which to explore the benefits of Pilates:

Pilates Personal Training

During your first session you will meet in our fully equipped Pilates Studio. You instructor will assess your body’s alignment, strength, and flexibility.  You will discuss goals and past exercise history to create a conditioning program that is individualized and perfect for you.  Sessions are available through appointment only.

Group Classes

Semi-Private (Duet) and Circuit Training classes are also available in our studio.  Normally a Semi-Private session will take place on the apparatus known as the Reformer and involve no more than two people. The Circuit class includes 2-5 people and makes use of all the equipment in the studio making it a great “next-step” for those who have experience on the Reformer.

Group Reformer classes are available in our studio downstairs.  These classes are limited to six people and run for 4-6 weeks.  All levels are available, please inquire at the Activities Desk if you are interested.

Ongoing Mat (or floor) classes are available using a wide array of Pilates props, such as: the circle, roller, Therabands, Stability Ball, Bosu, as well as Yogalates. Please consult our weekly Group Exercise Schedule for times, dates and levels.

Lastly, we have two Reformers on the Fitness Floor that we highly encourage members to use.  Any one of our highly skilled Pilates Instructors will be glad to set you on a program to learn how to use it on your own.
